streetlights in puddles
dozens!   but on the lamp post
only one

playing violin
and knitting    impossibles!
happens all the time

trying to recall
childhood i get lost and found
found and lost again

you know what?  I never try
recalling my last breath

nothing
what a wonderful thing
to do        to be

this northern coastal light
travels at less than
the speed of light
look at the willow
ask it

finally old
awake   outside   in sunlight
enough    just right

i go out carrying
all i need to finally see the world
stepping into garden shoes

Saturday 26 November 2011

November 26, 2011

gulls struggle by
   i'm inside calmly watching
      against the wind

dropped into water
the clay after all these years
finally dissolves

all the tight holding
relaxes softly into
ah!  all gone all gone

November 25, 2011

Cozied into bed at 4:16 am by the red numerals of the clock radio.  Pump of waves.   Ski hill lights across the Strait.  Vancouver lights illuminating low clouds like The Holy Ghost roaming between earth and sky.   Nisargadatta:  "Wisdom says I am nothing.   Love says I am everything.  My life flows between."  Awake in the early morning to myself, not to my concern for others and relations.

after stormy day
after late evening winds
a star!

how wonderful
not to be with you and you
and you and also you

how marvelous!
pileated woodpecker
  (not to grubs inside)

kept passing the sign
two eggs two bacon two toasts
today i stopped

November 24, 2011

Gera and I sat in her front room - an expression of my grandmother's - and shared tea and words.  We looked at each other, looked out at the rural yard enclosed, looked at the cups.  We said that you don't become enlightened, you just notice and remember the light.   Our anguish and excitement is the difference between this now, and the image we have of it.   How we think it is.   How we think it should be.   When the image disappears, the anguish and excitement go.   Gera smiles.   I smile.  We gesture a small toast with our cups.

brown fence blue barrel
between windows we look out
bare limbs cradled leaves

this is all there is and
don't know what i mean by it but
this is all there isn't

Outside, the ocean ramps up at high tide.   Eveline's prayer flags whip on their line.  Gulls swift upward, down.  The cats tramp around the house.  Last night they must have chased about:  from the floor this morning, I cleaned up a shattered pottery dish.  I love the stillness that seems like it is in me.   Gahan Wilson's cartoon says,  "Nothing happens next.   This is it."

a broad world of sound
wind outside and coffee in
how pleasant!

I sit in bed with coffee, pencil, paper.  Outside a freighter passes across the line of Bowen Island.   The morning dusk recedes into light as last night the evening dusk receded into dark.  Sleep.   Wake.   Time passes very slowly.   Time stops.

how luxuriously
holy i am this morning
coffee pencil bed

This is what my whole life was for.   Coffee.  A steel grey ocean with white curlings.   Memories.   Breath.   No time.   It's not that everything is OK:  it just doesn't matter.   One thought after another.   Saving nothing.   How would you save a cloud?   The slowest hour of my life.   Like doing ecstasy.   I doubt if you have time to read this, but I've had time to write it.

gold leaf covered path
this particular moment
ready to die

things seem unfamiliar
although i meet them daily
i am getting old

nothing makes sense
and so i settle downward
thighs feet hands belly

for the last time i think
and now the genitals and
anus and palms

thinking there's somewhere to go
and someone to go
go to your hands and belly
that's all
